PROPERTIES
Sulfaprim S is a synergistic antimicrobial combination of sulfadiazine and trimethoprim that blocks two consecutive steps in the synthesis of folinic acid and finally the synthesis of DNA and proteins in bacteria.
The consequence of the sequential double blockade is a strong mutual potentiation of the antibacterial effect that provides increased efficacy and prevents the development of bacterial resistance. Sulfadiazine is a low-dosage long-acting sulfonamide. It is rapidly absorbed and maintains serum concentration at the therapeutic level for at least 24 h.
Sulfonamide-trimethoprim combinations are active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including Actinomyces spp., Bordetella spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., Fusobacterium spp., Haemophilus spp., Klebsiella spp., Pasteurella spp., Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp. and Campylobacter spp., as well as Escherichia coli, streptococci, and staphylococci.
