PROPERTIES

Sulfaprim is a synergistic antimicrobial combination of sulfadimethoxine and trimethoprim that blocks two consecutive steps in the synthesis of folinic acid and finally the synthesis of DNA and proteins in bacteria.
The consequence of the sequential double blockade is a strong mutual potentiation of the antibacterial effect that provides increased efficacy and prevents the development of bacterial resistance. Sulfadimethoxine is a low-dosage and long-acting sulfonamide that is rapidly absorbed after injection. Sulfadimethoxine promptly reach high blood concentrations and maintain effective herapeutic blood levels for at least 24-hour.
The optimal 5:1 ratio of sulfadimethoxine and trimethoprim along with the extended half-life of sulfadimethoxine allows to obtain effective therapeutic levels of antibiotic with just a treatment per day.
Sulfaprim is active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including Actinomyces spp., Bordetella spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., Fusobacterium spp., Haemophilus spp., Klebsiella spp., Pasteurella spp., Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp. and Campylobacter spp., as well as Escherichia coli, streptococci, and staphylococci.

INDICATIONS

Sulfaprim is effective for the treatment of several bacterial diseases in cattle, goats, pigs, sheep and horses: enteric and septicaemic colibacillosis and salmonellosis, bovine respiratory disease complex (shipping fever), pneumonia, rhinitis, bronchitis, infections secondary to viral pneumonias, cystitis, nephritis, vaginitis, metritis, endometritis, post-operative infections, pododermatitis, bacterial arthritis and septicaemias.
