PROPERTIES
Ampicillin is a well-known semisynthetic penicillin endowed with broad spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Dicloxacillin is highly resistant to ß-lactamases, against which it shows greater binding affinity than ampicillin. Therefore, dicloxacillin stably fixes these enzymes, leaving ampicillin free to act against otherwise resistant bacterial strains. The inactivation of ß-lactamases due to dicloxacillin induces an increase of the activity of ampicillin and this synergic action is evident in the lower MICs of each antibiotic when in association. The injectable formulation also exploits the mechanism of competition for carrier proteins. Dicloxacillin is endowed with greater binding capacity with these proteins and therefore it is more susceptible to binding than ampicillin. Thus, quantities of free ampicillin in the blood and organic fluids are increased.
INDICATIONS
Cloxalene Plus is indicated for the treatment of respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital and cutaneous infections due to sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms.
