PROPERTIES
Flumequine is a quinolone chemotherapeutic agent. The fluorine present in the molecule enhances the activity of the drug. It is active against Salmonella spp., E. coli, Pasteurella spp., Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp., Bordetella spp., Enterobacter spp. and Staphylococcus spp.
Flumequine exerts its activity by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through blockage of the DNA-polymerase enzyme, thereby determining a bactericidal effect.
Flumequine administered by oral route is readily absorbed and rapidly distributes to the various compartments of the organism. Plasma half-life varies from 5 to 7 h according to species.
Main excretion route is renal, although a small aliquot is excreted by faecal route.
