PROPERTIES
Cefadroxil, as all cephalosporins, exerts its bactericidal activity by interfering on the bacterial cell wall synthesis during the replication phase.
Cefadroxil action leads to a rapid lysis of the microorganism, resulting in bacterial death.
Cefadroxil presents a broad spectrum of action, which includes both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Leptospira spp., Clostridium spp,). and Gram-negative bacteria (including E. coli and Pasteurella multocida) responsible of the most soft tissues, respiratory and urogenital tracts infections of dogs and cats.
The prolonged efficacy of cefadroxil is a consequence of the post-antibiotic effect of this molecule, particularly longer than with other cephalosporins of the same generation.
This feature allows cefadroxil to inhibit bacteria growth, even at lower concentrations than the MIC.
INDICATIONS
Skin infections and soft tissues infections (cellulitis, pyoderma, infected wounds and abscesses); urogenital infections (cystitis, nephritis, metritis, vaginitis); respiratory infections (pneumonia, tonsillitis, upper respiratory; airways infections).
ADMINISTRATION
Oral.
DOSAGE
The recommended oral dose of cefadroxil is 20 mg/kg per day.
In the therapy of particularly severe cases, the dose can be doubled. In these cases it is recommended to split the dose in two daily administrations.
The treatment should be continued for at least 48 hours after the disappearance of the fever or other symptoms.
