PROPERTIES

Marbofloxacin is a synthetic bactericidal antibiotic, belonging to the fluoroquinolone family; its mechanism of action is based on inhibition of the enzyme DNA gyrase. It has a broad spectrum of action and includes Gram-positive bacteria (particularly Staphylococci and Streptococci), Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Morganella morganii, Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., Pasteurella spp. Haemophilus spp., Moraxella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Brucella canis) and mycoplasmas. After oral administration at the recommended dose of 2 mg/kg bw in dogs and cats, marbofloxacin is rapidly absorbed and reaches maximum plasma concentrations of 1.5 µg/ml within approximately 2 hours of administration.
The bioavailability of marbofloxacin is close to 100%.
Marbofloxacin binds weakly to plasma proteins (less than 10%) and distributes extensively throughout the organism. In most tissues (liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, bladder, uterus and the digestive system), it reaches concentrations greater than those in the plasma. Marbofloxacin is eliminated slowly (elimination half-life of 14 hours in the dog and 10 hours in the cat), principally in active form via the urine (2/3) and the feces (1/3).

INDICATIONS

Therapy against infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to marbofloxacin:
In the dog: superficial and deep pyoderma; infections of the urinary tract caused by Proteus mirabilis and E. coli, associated or not with prostatitis or epididymitis; infections of the respiratory system.
In cats: cutaneous and subcutaneous infections (sores, abscesses and phlegmon).

ADMINISTRATION

Oral.
